King’s Ely

Music is the beating heart of King’s Ely and is the reason why our school, located just a stone’s throw from the world-famous Ely Cathedral, came into existence in the first place.

Over a third of our students learn a musical instrument or receive vocal tuition and the quality, range and variety of ensembles all attest to the school’s musical pedigree.

King’s Ely has numerous string, woodwind, brass, percussion, guitar and rock groups, not forgetting the astounding Chapel Choir, the King’s Barbers, an award-winning close harmony group made up of ex-choristers, and large instrumental groups such as the King’s Orchestra, Concert Band and Jazz Band. The school calendar is jam-packed with student-led and professional concerts, workshops and masterclasses, all of which, together with the excellence of our cathedral choirs, highlight how music is the soul of the King’s Ely community and testify to its inclusivity. Musical, choral and organ scholarships are available.

The University of the Arts Helsinki: Sibelius Academy

The University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki) fosters Finnish artistic heritage and renews art. The university was launched in 2013 upon the merging of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Sibelius Academy, and Theatre Academy Helsinki.

Sibelius Academy is the only music university in Finland and the biggest of its kind in Scandinavia. It was founded as the Helsinki Music Institute in 1882 on a private initiative. Martin Wegelius was appointed as the first director, and he led the Institute until his death in 1906.

Wegelius thought that musicians should educate themselves broadly. He himself taught theoretical subjects, music history, and solfége. Due to a lack of suitable study material, he also wrote some textbooks himself. Wegelius emphasized the teaching of composition and, by doing that, he managed to create a new generation of composers in Finland.
