This week's free download is John Jenkins's Newark Siege, performed by trumpeter Jonathan Freeman-Attwood and pianist Daniel-Ben Pienaar. It is recorded on the Linn label and received four stars in the October issue of BBC Music Magazine.

Jenkins's Fantasia Suite in D 'Newark Siege' was originally written for five viols, and was inspired by the 1645-1646 siege during the Civil War. Newark had been one of the most important Royalist bases, so was besieged several times throughout the course of the war. Jenkins's piece depicts the battles between the two sides.

'In their ongoing mission to flesh out the rather slender body of chamber music for trumpet and piano, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood and Daniel-Ben Pienaar here appropriate repertoire from the 17th century, one of the most glorious periods in English music', writes Kate Bolton-Porciatti. 'The fanfares and percussive rhythms of John Jenkins's battle piece Newark Siege sound brilliant and incisive on brass and keyboard'.
