This week, our free download is Le ciel protège les héros, from Lully's opera Alceste, LWV 50, courtesy of Aparté. It is performed by baritone Ettienne Bazola and directed by Christophe Rousset, and was the opera choice in the April issue of BBC Music Magazine.

Lully's second tragédie en musique is loosley based on Euripides's drama Alcestis, and the music closely underpins the emotions in the opera, switfly moving from arias, to choruses, and recitatives. First performed in 1674, Alceste's themes of love and heroics are still relevent and entertaining to the modern listener.

'Directing from the harpsichord, Christophe Rousset brings just the right balance of spontaneity and refinement to this recording', writes Kate Bolton-Porciatti. 'Brass and percussion have a field-day in the various militaristic marches and celebratory pieces, sumptuously scored and full of pomp and ceremony'.
